Hyperthermic treatment at 43 degrees C suppressed the growth of Ehrlich ascites tumor (EAT) cells in vitro. Incubation of EAT cells at 43 degrees C for as little as 1.5 h totally abolished the transplantability of the tumor. Background
Meiotic prophase is a critical stage in sexual reproduction. Aberrant chromosome recombination during this stage is a leading cause of human miscarriages and birth defects. However, due to the experimental intractability of mammalian gonads, only a very limited number of meiotic genes have been characterized. Food intake was restricted to 75% of ad libitum levels in 37 male Psammomys obesus (Israeli Sand Rats) from the ages of 4 (weaning) to 10 weeks. Energy restriction reduced the mean body weight at 10 weeks by 29% compared with 44 ad libitum fed controls. Hyperglycemia was prevented completely in the food-restricted group, and mean blood glucose concentrations were significantly reduced (3.8 ± 0.2 vs. 5.5 ± 0.4 μmol/L; p<0.05) compared with control animals. Plasma insulin concentrations were also decreased significantly compared with ad libitum fed controls (105 ± 13 vs. 241 ± 29 mU/L;p<0.05). Although energy restriction prevented hyperglycemia from developing in 10-week-old P. obesus, 19% of the food restricted animals still developed hyperinsu-linemia. We concluded that hyperphagia between the ages of 4 to 10 weeks may be essential for the development of noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus in P. obesus, but that hyperinsulinemia may still occur in the absence of hyperphagia and hyperglycemia, suggesting a significant genetic influence on the development of hyperinsulinemia in this animal model. 相似文献

We investigated the relationship between site productivity and diversity of vascular plants, bryophytes, lichens, and polypore fungi in forests based on species richness data in 0.25 ha forest plots (grain size), selected from six 150–200 ha study areas (focus), and spanning over a latitudinal distance of 1350 km (extent) in Norway. We 1) searched for prevailing productivity-diversity relationships (PDRs), 2) compared PDRs among taxonomic groups and species found in different micro-habitats, and 3) investigated the effect of increasing plot (grain) size on PDRs. Using vegetation types as a surrogate for site productivity, we found a general pattern of increasing species richness with site productivity. On average total species richness doubled with a ten-fold increase in productivity. Lichens PDRs stood out as less pronounced and more variable than for other species groups investigated. PDRs of species associated with downed logs tended to level off at high-productive sites, a pattern interpreted as an effect of disturbance. Ontario provincial abattoirs have the potential to be important sources of syndromic surveillance data for emerging diseases of concern to animal health, public health and food safety. Percolation of rainfall through woodwaste piles leaches natural chemicals from the wood residuals that can have adverse impacts on the environment. A study was conducted on a woodwaste storage site, adjacent to the Lower Fraser River, near Mission, BC, Canada. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effectiveness of constructed wetland for treatment of this woodwaste leachate. The leachate was characterized by high oxygen demand, tannin and lignin, and volatile fatty acids (VFAs), but low pH and nutrients. Diluted leachate passed through six pilot-scale wetland cells, four planted with cattail (Typha latifolia) and two unplanted controls, with a hydraulic retention time of 7 days and an average depth of 40 cm. Nutrient addition and pH adjustments were made to improve contaminant removal. Reductions in contaminants were consistently achieved, with average removals for BOD, COD, VFAs and tannin and lignin of 60, 50, 69 and 42%, respectively. Climatic conditions had an impact on the performance of the constructed wetland. Further operation of the system will help to elucidate the seasonal fluctuations.
